Math Tutoring in Tokyo

In-home, personalized math tutoring for international school students in Tokyo

Matt Kish at Tokyo Learning Lab provides individualized math tutoring for students attending international schools in Tokyo. Whether a student needs support with challenging concepts, wants to strengthen foundational skills, or is ready to explore more advanced mathematics, instruction is tailored to their individual needs, abilities, and goals.

As an experienced educator with more than 20 years of experience at international schools, I work directly with every student to develop mathematical understanding, strengthen problem-solving skills, and build confidence

Mathematics Tutoring Tailored to Each Student

Students develop mathematical skills at different rates, and effective instruction should reflect those differences. Lessons are designed around each student’s current understanding, school curriculum, and learning goals.

Areas of support include:

  • Elementary Mathematics: Number sense, arithmetic, fractions, decimals, multiplication, division, and problem-solving.
  • Middle School Mathematics: Ratios, proportional reasoning, percentages, expressions, equations, geometry, and pre-algebra.
  • Advanced and Accelerated Mathematics: Enrichment, challenging problem-solving, and preparation for more advanced coursework.
  • Algebra: Developing fluency with algebraic expressions, equations, inequalities, functions, and other foundational concepts.
  • Test Preparation: Study skills and strategies to support school or standardized assessments
  • School Support: Reinforcing classroom learning, preparing for assessments, and working through challenging assignments.

An Approach Focused on Understanding

My approach to math tutoring emphasizes understanding why mathematical procedures work, rather than simply memorizing steps. Students are encouraged to explain their reasoning, make connections between concepts, and develop strategies for solving unfamiliar problems.

Instruction begins with an understanding of the student’s existing skills and areas for development. Lessons then build on those strengths while addressing specific learning needs. For students who are ready for greater challenges, instruction can move beyond grade-level expectations to explore more advanced concepts.

Experienced, One-on-One Instruction

Tokyo Learning Lab is an independent tutoring practice led by Matt Kish, an educator with more than 20 years of experience in teaching and educational leadership at international schools, including the American School in Japan, Singapore American School, and the American School in London.

Unlike a tutoring agency that assigns students to different instructors, I work personally with every student. This allows me to develop a detailed understanding of each student’s abilities, learning habits, and goals and to adapt instruction accordingly. I have a strong understanding of international school mathematics curricula, which allows me to align our tutoring sessions to what your child is learning in school.

Math tutoring is provided through private, one-on-one lessons in the student’s home in Tokyo, with online instruction also available.
